This self-drive itinerary takes you to some of Western Canada’s most captivating Indigenous heritage sites, including the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site and the Nisga’a Lands in northern British Columbia. Spectacular scenery awaits as you explore Waterton Lakes National Park, and drive through the Coastal Mountains whilst following the mighty Skeena River.

Day 1
Calgary
Arrive at Calgary International Airport, pick up your rental car and head to your downtown hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the city, why not head up the Calgary Tower for views over the prairies and distant Rocky Mountains?
Day 2-3
Waterton Lakes National Park
Drive south to Waterton Lakes National Park where you can expect to find clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, and spectacular mountain vistas. On the way, visit the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site which preserves more than 6,000 years of Plains Buffalo and Blackfoot culture, and you'll find a host of archaeological and cultural treasures through its interpretive programming. Spend the next day exploring Waterton Lakes National Park, enjoying the many hiking trails, taking a canoe out on Cameron Lake or joining a lake cruise on Waterton Lake.
Day 4-6
Banff
Head up to Banff, nestled in the heart of Banff National Park and explore the surrounding national park and its majestic scenery. In town, visit the Buffalo Nations Museum and journey into the extraordinary heritage of the First Nations People of the Northern Plains and Canadian Rockies. Ride the nearby Banff Gondola up to the top of Sulphur Mountain to enjoy incredible views of the 6 mountain ranges that surround the town and then stroll the riverside path to the beautiful Bow Falls. The next day why not drive the Bow Valley Parkway to the iconic Lake Louise for a spectacular view that will take your breath away.
Day 7-9
Prince Rupert
Head back to Calgary International Airport in time for your flight to Terrace. After picking up a hire car, travel on Highway 16 to Prince Rupert. This scenic stretch of highway hugs the Skeena River as it weaves its way through the coastal mountains. Luckily there are numerous pull-outs for you to stop and admire the views! On the way to Prince Rupert stop at the North Pacific Cannery, designated a National Historic Site to learn the story of an industry that played a key role in BC’s development over the last 100 years. You have two full days to explore the town so stroll historic Cow Bay and take your pick from the waterfront restaurants offering fresh seafood. Take to the water, either on a tour to Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary (May to July) or on a whale watching tour (July to September).
Day 10-12
Terrace
Take Highway 16 back to Terrace, enjoying the scenic drive once again, but from a different viewpoint. You have two full days in Terrace to explore the surrounding area and its Indigenous heritage. Spend a full day exploring the Nisga’a Highway, just north of Terrace. On this auto-tour you will find the Nisga’a Museum, trails through ancient lava beds, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints. The next day, head to the town of Hazelton, home to the Ksan Historical Village and Museum. Be guided round the traditional longhouses, admire the intricate totem poles, and learn more about the history of the Gitxsan people who have called this place home for thousands of years.
Day 13
Fly Home
Your time in Western Canada has come to an end. Drop your hire car off at Terrace Airport ready for your flight home.
