East or West?
Driving in Western Canada
Western Canada has some of the most iconic scenery in the whole country. It's here that you'll find the Canadian Rocky Mountains. They run through Banff and Jasper National Parks in the province of Alberta, and down into the province of British Columbia in areas like Revelstoke and Yoho National Park. Western Canada is also home to Whistler in the Coast Mountains and Vancouver on the Pacific Coast.
Driving in Eastern Canada
Eastern Canada is the portion of Canada that sits on the Atlantic Ocean. It covers some incredibly varied regions, from the province of Ontario on the shores of one of America's Great Lakes to the Maritime Provinces like Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Eastern Canada is home to cosmopolitan cities like the country's largest city, Toronto, as well as its capital, Ottawa. The most famous attraction here is Niagara Falls.

If you are planning a fly drive holiday in Canada and are wondering how difficult it is to drive in the country, then you don’t need to worry. The language on the road signs in Canada is in English, and the rules of the road are similar to that of the UK. The one major difference is that in Canada, you will be driving on the right side of the road.
You don’t need to organise a Canada fly drive itinerary, you can speak to our Canada travel experts and tell them where you would like to go. We will do the rest of the groundwork and tailor-make the perfect trip for you.
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to visit some of Canada’s most iconic cities, then we can organise trips to major destinations, such as flights to Toronto, and you can start your fly drive holiday from there. You might want to experience the incredible wildlife and stunning natural beauty the country boasts, and you can enjoy this on road trips such as The Icefields Parkway.
To rent a car in Canada, you must be at least 21 years old and have held your licence for a minimum of one year. However, in Saskatchewan and/or Quebec, you can drive a rental car at 18. Restrictions may also vary depending on the car rental category and supplier.
If you plan to use a driver’s licence that is not written in French or English in Canada, you will need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your home country. An IDP will give you a translation of your licence into French and English.
International visitors to Canada will need car insurance coverage. Our fly drive holidays at Canadian Affair come with fully inclusive insurance, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
No, in Canada, you drive on the right-hand side of the road, and you overtake cars on the left. On highways with multiple lanes, the same rules apply with slower traffic sticking to lanes on the right-hand side and overtaking lanes on the left.

- Plan ahead.
- Keep your fuel topped up: Some roads will stretch for long distances without a petrol station, so make sure you have filled your car up with petrol. You should also check where the petrol stations are located along the route you are driving.

- Ensure your vehicle has winter tyres.

The Icefields Parkway
This section of Highway 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper is the most beautiful drive in the Canadian Rockies. Its 143 miles could be completed in a few hours, but you should allow a full day for all the scenic stop-offs. Peyto Lake is one of the best examples of a turquoise glacier lake, while the Athabasca Glacier ice truck tour is a must-do.
Beyond these two iconic attractions, the Icefields Parkway is dotted with numerous scenic pull-outs and viewpoints, where you can pause to admire the ever-changing landscape. Explore the Mistaya Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by the waters of the Mistaya River, or hike to the top of Sunwapta Falls, where the thunderous waters plunge into a deep canyon. The parkway also offers opportunities for wildlife encounters, with bears, elk, and other creatures often spotted along the roadside.
The Icefields Parkway is not just a scenic drive; it's a journey through time. The glaciers, the towering peaks, the ancient forests, and the diverse wildlife all tell a story of the earth's changing landscapes over millions of years. With each twist and turn of the road, you'll discover new vistas, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders that surround you.
