Spectacular scenery awaits as you explore Waterton Lakes National Park, and drive through the Coastal Mountains. The highlight of your journey is a visit to Haida Gwaii, a temperate archipelago teeming with wildlife, ancient rainforests, pristine rivers and bays, and Indigenous heritage sites.

Day 1-2
Waterton Lakes National Park
Arrive at Calgary International Airport and after picking up your hire car, head south to Waterton Lakes National Park. In this stunning National Park expect to find clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, and mountain vistas. Spend a full day in the park, exploring the many hiking trails, taking a canoe out on Cameron Lake or joining a lake cruise on Waterton Lake.
Day 3-4
Banff
Start the day by visiting the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site. The site preserves more than 6,000 years of Plains Buffalo and Blackfoot culture, and you'll find a host of archaeological and cultural treasures through its interpretive programming. Continue up to Banff, nestled in the heart of Banff National Park and spend the next day exploring the spectacular scenery. In town, visit the Buffalo Nations Museum and journey into the extraordinary heritage of the First Nations People of the Northern Plains and Canadian Rockies.
Day 5-7
Prince Rupert
Head back to Calgary International Airport in time for your flight to Terrace. After picking up a hire car, travel on Highway 16 to Prince Rupert. This scenic stretch of highway hugs the Skeena River as it weaves its way through the coastal mountains. Luckily there are numerous pull-outs for you to stop and admire the views! On the way to Prince Rupert stop at the North Pacific Cannery, designated a National Historic Site to learn the story of an industry that played a key role in BC’s development over the last 100 years. You have two full days to explore the town so stroll historic Cow Bay and take your pick from the waterfront restaurants offering fresh seafood. Take to the water, either on a tour to Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary (May to July) or on a whale watching tour (July to September).
Day 8-11
Haida Gwaii
Take the ferry over to Haida Gwaii, a temperate archipelago teeming with wildlife, ancient rainforests, pristine rivers and bays, and Indigenous heritage sites. There is so much to see and do, luckily you have three full days on the island to try and fit it all in! Start at the Haida Heritage Centre, which introduces the history and living culture of the Haida, including a museum, a carving shed, and six poles to represent six of the southernmost villages on Haida Gwaii. Hike up Taaw Tldáaw in Naikoon Provincial Park to viewing platforms overlooking ocean and the beach below and take to the water on a kayak tour and experience the islands' beaches and coastal bluffs.
Day 12-14
Terrace
Take the ferry back to the mainland and then join Highway 16 back to Terrace, enjoying the scenic drive once again, but from a different viewpoint. You have two full days in Terrace to explore the surrounding area and its Indigenous heritage. Spend a full day exploring the Nisga’a Highway, just north of Terrace. On this auto-tour you will find the Nisga’a Museum, trails through ancient lava beds, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints. The next day, head to the town of Hazelton, home to the Ksan Historical Village and Museum. Be guided round the traditional longhouses, admire the intricate totem poles, and learn more about the history of the Gitxsan people who have called this place home for thousands of years.
Day 15
Fly Home
Your time in Western Canada has come to an end. Drop your hire car off at Terrace Airport ready for your flight home.
